Austin is home to a stereotypic Western rodeo, the Horsepower Rodeo and, believe-it-or-not, a garbage truck rodeo.
On Saturday, March 4th, Waste Connections, the third largest waste and recycling industry company in North America, held a Driver and Heavy Equipment Rodeo in Austin, Texas. The driver portion of the competition was located at Circuit of The Americas with competitors coming from across 19 Waste Connection facilities. The contestants represented the “best-of-the-best;” their unblemished safe driving records and years of tenure ranked them among the top 5% of drivers in the division. In other words, these drivers have skills.
The driver course was comprised of eight obstacles which challenged each driver’s skill. At the end of the day, a single driver was crowned champion. Aaron McKinley, a talented driver from the North Austin facility in Pflugerville, Texas, took home the top distinction and earned the prestigious right to represent the division at the Region Rodeo competition on May 4th.
As a circuit that hosts many safety courses throughout the year, COTA was proud to serve as the backdrop to a day celebrating safe driving for Waste Connections, Inc’s top tier. Congrats to all the participants – they accomplished outstanding feats in large trucks that many drivers couldn’t achieve in a standard car!
The entire event was a festive outing for all involved. With food trucks, bounce houses, face painting, a ballon artist and a DJ, the participants’ friends and families also enjoyed the day at COTA supporting the drivers.
