Despite the best efforts of the 27 other V8 Supercars™ drivers, none were able to bump Jamie Whincup from his customary position as race pole sitter. During Sunday morning’s two qualifying rounds for Race 15 and 16 in this weekend’s V8 Supercars Austin 400 race series at Circuit of the Americas™, Whincup in his No.1 Red Bull Racing Australia Holden snapped up the pole for both of Sunday’s races. In the process he also ran the fastest qualifying lap so far, with a record time of 1:31.994 on the circuit’s modified 2.4-mile short track.
The trio atop the grid for Race 15 remained the same as it had been all weekend, with Whincup on the pole, joined by teammate, Craig Lowndes, in the No. 888 Red Bull Racing Australia Holden, who grabbed down his usual No. 2 spot on the grid, and Lockwood Racing’s Fabian Coulthard in the No. 14 Holden in third. The three drivers finished 1-2-3 on the podium in both of Saturday’s races.
