Shane Van Gisbergen, one of three drivers from the V8 Supercars™ series who hails from New Zealand, put most of the Aussie drivers to shame during afternoon practice sessions on May 17, as he steadily improved his position, moving his No. 97 Team TEKNO, VIP Pet Foods Holden up from third to first during the first three practice sessions.
Currently holding fifth place in the series points standing, despite posting a day’s best time of 1:33.952 in the final session, Van Gisbergen he fell back to 10th position in the final practice, due in large part to a new set of tires. The best time of the day was posted in the final practice by Craig Lowndes driving the No. 888 Red Bull Racing Holden. He tripped the stopwatch at 1:32.904, a full second faster than Van Gisbergen.
