In what has become commonplace at Grand Prix race practice sessions in recent years, the No. 1 and No. 2 Red Bull cars of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber finished one-two in Friday afternoon’s Formula 1™ practice session at Circuit of The Americas. Vettel was clocked rounding the 20-turn track in just 1:37.305, Webber at 1:37.420.
With just one week to go until Formula 1™ teams and drivers descend on Austin, Texas, to prepare for the 2013 FORMULA 1 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX, Circuit of The Americas’ F1™ correspondent Dan Knutson caught up with the men who will compete for fortune and glory at the United States new home for premier motorsports and entertainment. Circuit of The Americas today entered the record books as the first purpose-built Formula 1™ racetrack in the country to host its own Grand Prix. An exuberant crowd of 117,429 packed the new 330-acre facility to watch Vodafone McLaren Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton claim his fourth Grand Prix of the season and his second United States Grand Prix victory in five years having won the 2007 Formula 1™ race last hosted in Indianapolis. Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel, current points leader in the drivers’ standings, was second with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso third. McLaren was awarded the constructor’s trophy for Austin’s inaugural event. Hamilton’s victory means the driver’s title won’t be decided until the season’s final race in Saὀ Paulo, Brazil, next weekend, while Red Bull sealed the deal by winning the 2012 constructors' title based on the overall standings at the end of the Austin race.
