The Circuit of The Americas (COTA) was selected by the Austin District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) to receive the 2013 ULI Austin Award of Distinction for Private Development

The award recognizes sound land use practices in combination with building healthy places. The ULI defines healthy places as those designed, built, and programmed to support the physical, mental, and social well-being of the people who live, work, learn, and visit them. Characteristics of the places recognized include access to the natural environment, amenities for people to reach their full potential, and addressing unique community issues with innovative and sustainable solutions.

Nominated projects were selected by an awards committee of ULI members, and finalists were judged by a jury. On hand to receive the award at this morning’s breakfast ceremony was Edgar Farrera, AIA, LEED AP, COTA’s director of sustainability; and Miguel Rivera, FAIA whose architecture firm designed key components of the COTA facility.

The ULI recognition is the latest in a string of recent awards for COTA, which was just named Pollstar Magazine’s “Best New Major Concert Venue” of 2013 for the circuit’s Austin360 Amphitheater

“We would like to thank the Austin District of the Urban Land Institute for this important distinction,” COTA Chairman Bobby Epstein said. “We designed the campus with a strong focus on sustainable building and operational practices.  That platform, along with a shared vision among our employees and our actions, has allowed us to achieve this recognition milestone.  Special thanks go to the conscientious design team led by Austin-based Miró Rivera Architects, Tilke GbH, and our general contractor, Austin Commercial. We hope we’ve demonstrated the power of thoughtful planning and have created a valuable community asset.”
